Needs Tier List

This needs tier list ranks care difficulty, not raw combat power. Dinosaur by Dinosaur Master (Steam app 3294300, August 13, 2026) asks you to honor species needs so herbivores, carnivores, aquatics, and pterosaurs prosper together. With 40+ species and about eighty male/female variants across fifteen maps, a needs-first ranking keeps Classic, Creative, and FPS Survival islands from collapsing under pretty but impossible stocking.

Pair this page with ecosystem symbiosis, the category guides for herbivores, carnivores, and aquatic and pterosaurs, plus the Species Hub.

Tier definitions

S — Teachable needs. Clear hunger and thirst signals, forgiving spacing, ideal for first Creative drills and day-one Classic parks.

A — Honest specialists. Manageable if water, forage, or hunting lanes match the island planner. Great second-wave stocking.

B — Multi-factor needs. Combine diet pressure with nesting fussiness or aggression spikes. Require possession checks via control dinosaurs.

C — Showcase maintenance. Best on polished Creative maps or late Classic saves after you have recovery habits and surplus prey or plant belts.

D — Stress-test only. Use to break designs on purpose. Avoid in FPS Survival until you know controls cold.

Exact species assignment will firm up as launch builds finalize; the tier meanings stay stable and should guide every wishlist video you watch.

How to score a species yourself

When you unlock or place an animal, grade it on:

  1. Food intensity and competition with neighbors
  2. Water dependency and drought fragility
  3. Nesting footprint and male/female sensitivity
  4. Aggression toward herds or the player
  5. Terrain demands (flat graze vs cliffs vs deep shelves)

If three or more categories feel harsh, treat it as B or lower even if the model looks iconic. Symbiosis fails when one “cool” animal silently taxes every other loop—re-read game modes so Creative experiments do not trick you into Classic disasters.

  1. S-tier foundation herbivores on a simple inland loop
  2. A-tier browsers once forage belts are doubled
  3. Controllable carnivores with refuge lanes drawn
  4. Aquatic cohorts after shelves exist
  5. Pterosaurs after launch cliffs exist
  6. B/C specialists for spectacle
  7. Re-validate after every major editor pass using island editor notes

Mode modifiers

Creative — temporarily ignore economy stress, but still log which needs would break in Classic.

Classic — trust this tier list literally; upgrade tiers only when surplus is proven.

FPS Survival — bump any player-aggressive carnivore up one difficulty notch—see FPS Survival.

Co-op usage

Share the tier list in local co-op or Remote Play voice chat before stocking. One player reads needs; the other sculpts. English-only UI keeps callouts consistent. No codes shortcut exists—care skill is the progression. Bookmark Getting Started, wiki links, and system requirements for launch prep.

A needs tier list is a promise to your future self: stock the easy truths first, earn the right to keep fragile wonders alive.

Example scoring worksheet

Create a simple table in your notes for each animal you place:

FactorScore 1–5Notes
Food intensityCompetes with whom?
Water dependencySingle shore or redundant?
Nesting fussinessSex mix sensitive?
AggressionThreat to herds or player?
Terrain demandFlat, cliff, or deep shelf?

Average the scores. Below 2.5 trends S/A. Above 3.5 trends B/C. Use Creative to gather scores quickly, then honor them in Classic. Share the worksheet in co-op voice chat so nobody “just adds one more apex” without looking at the numbers. Revisit scores when Updates Hub notes mention AI or diet changes, and keep controls practice aligned with whichever high-aggression animals you insist on showcasing.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about Dinosaur on Steam.

Is this a PvP combat tier list?

No. It ranks how hard species are to keep healthy and symbiotic inside the island sim.

Why start with S-tier needs animals?

They teach food, water, and nesting feedback without punishing every small editor mistake.

Do male/female variants change needs tiers?

They can affect nesting and herd dynamics. Treat skewed sex mixes as an extra management factor on sensitive species.

Should FPS Survival players use different tiers?

Use the same ladder, but treat player-threatening carnivores as one tier harder until you master survival movement.
